Wrought Iron Railings in Thornton, COOrnamental Ironwork for Porches, Entries, and Stairs

An iron railing reads as permanent in a way other materials don’t. We build it that way, with a material we’re honest about and a design that fits your property.

Wrought iron railings are one of our Railing Contractor services for porches, entries, balconies, and stairs where the look matters as much as the code. Like the rest of our ironwork, we’re upfront about what the material actually is before we design anything.

Why Thornton Homeowners Choose Us for Iron Railings

Iron railings get chosen for how they look, but they still have to meet the same code numbers as any other railing — height, spacing, and on stairs, a graspable profile. We design for both, not just the parts that show.

Leo or someone from his crew talks through design and code requirements together from the start, so you're not choosing between a railing that looks right and one that's actually legal.

Worth Knowing

What “Wrought Iron” Means Here, Too

Same honest answer as the rest of our ironwork: genuine hand-forged wrought iron is barely produced commercially anymore. What we build is mild steel, shaped and welded to the traditional look, primed and finished to hold up outdoors for decades. It’s a style name at this point more than a literal material claim, and we’d rather tell you that upfront than let you assume otherwise.

Design Styles We Build

Simple Baluster

Clean vertical lines for porches and balconies where you want security without heavy ornamentation.

Scrollwork & Panels

Decorative detail for stair railings and entry features, where the design is meant to be noticed.

We can match new railings to existing ironwork elsewhere on the property, or design something new that fits the architecture of the house.

Solving the Grip Problem

Wood or Composite Cap Rail
Handles the graspable profile requirement
Iron Balusters
Handles security and style

Iron alone is a great fit for balusters — strong, decorative, hard to climb or force through. It's a worse fit as an actual handrail on a stairway, since matching the exact graspable profile code requires usually means a lot of extra fabrication for a material that isn't naturally suited to it. That's why a lot of iron stair railings pair iron balusters below with a wood or composite cap rail on top, and you get both without compromising on either.

On porches, entries, and flat guards where there's no stair-specific handrail requirement, iron can run the whole height without that combination being necessary.

Finish and Upkeep

Powder coating holds up longer than paint and resists chipping, though it costs more and usually means the section goes off-site for the coating process. Paint is more affordable and can be touched up in place, which matters more on a railing than a fence, since a handrail gets constant hand contact at exactly the spot where a coating wears fastest. Plan on checking the grip point for wear more often than the rest of the railing, and touching it up before bare metal shows and rust gets started.

Post attachment matters here too, same as any other railing. Iron posts get set in concrete deep enough to handle the load requirement, not just deep enough to stand up straight on install day — the connection has to hold up to someone actually leaning on it, not just look solid.
