This surprises a lot of homeowners moving from Thornton or the northern suburbs: Denver caps front yard fences at 4 feet, and anything taller in the front needs an over-height permit — a different process than the simpler rules a lot of the northern suburbs use. Side and backyard fences can go up to 6 feet, but go above that and you’re generally looking at a special over-height variance, which isn’t a quick approval.

Front yards have their own catch, too. Denver requires front yard fences to be more than 50% open — picket, iron, or open rail styles work, but a solid privacy fence in the front yard generally isn’t allowed the way it might be elsewhere. And if your property sits in one of Denver’s historic districts, the fence design goes through a separate Landmark Preservation Board review regardless of height, a layer of process Thornton properties never have to deal with.
