The Post Test: How to Tell If It’s Really Rotted

Wood posts rot right at the ground line, not deep underground and not high above it. That spot is the only place where moisture, oxygen, and the microorganisms that break down wood all come together consistently — below the surface there’s not enough air, and above it the wood dries out too often for rot to take hold.

A post can look completely fine above ground while it’s almost rotted through just a few inches below the surface.

We test the post right at grade, not just eyeball it. Press a screwdriver into the wood at ground level: if it sinks in easily or the wood feels soft and spongy, that post has real rot, not just surface weathering. A post that’s soft only at the very tip or top cap is a different, much smaller problem than one that’s spongy at the base.

For a wood post with rot limited to the base and solid wood above it, a steel repair spike or mender can bypass the rotted section entirely — bolted to the sound wood and driven into the ground, no new concrete required.
