Code requires a deck guard to resist a 200-pound concentrated load, applied in any direction, at any point along the top rail or post. That’s not a rough guideline — it’s tested with a real safety factor, which in practice means the connection needs to hold up to something closer to 500 pounds before it’s considered compliant.

Here’s what that means in practice: a post that’s just screwed to the outside of the rim joist, the way a lot of decks get built, usually doesn’t come close to passing that test.
